Canadian wartime production of aircraft soared from the advent of the Second War. By 1941, the huge Boeing PBY Catalina Plant #3 was completed on Sea Island in Richmond, B.C., for the production of the Catalina/Canso PBY-5(A) flying boats and amphibians, and later fuselage sections for the B-29 Super Fortress (e.g., Enola Gay).
Locals may remember seeing a pair of PBY-5A's, painted yellow, stored at the Cassidy Airfield for many years.
Our speaker, Jack Nellist, will discuss his memories and experiences of wartime on the west coast, as well as the showing of an 8-minute video compilation of archival images and footage of the production of the Catalina and B-29. The presentation will also cover some of the missions these aircraft were assigned.
Nellist has also retained original technical drawings from the factory some of which will be displayed at the presentation.
About the speaker:
Nanaimo resident, Jack Nellist is also the author of the book, Aircraft Production During World War II: Boeing Aircraft of Canada. Jack started building model airplanes at the age of ten - and he's still building them.
