Nanaimo Historical Society Special Presentation and Annual General Meeting

Nanaimo Historical Society President, Darrell Ohs, will display and discuss photographs from selected articles he contributed to the Time-Colonist Islander magazine and other publications.
The images depict the explorations of an eclectic range of Island subjects and places, many on the verge of fading from our landscape and remembrance. This session begins with Port Alberni and points south; the first session, at the 2015 AGM, previously covered the northern regions of the Island. The photographs and their backstories are selected within the range of contemporary history and living memory, and as such may likely evoke personal and nostalgic recollections of the not-so-distant past. Some of the stories were captured on film and in words in the last weeks, or even days, before the subjects yielded to time and progress. We'll revisit, for example. some images of the Diners' Rendezvous (Wong Bros. era), Johnson's Hardware, and the MV Kalakala Ferry. At this time, the destiny of several other icons of the Island under discussion is yet to be determined.
Audience participation is welcome and expected. Feel free to speak up and contribute to the narrative if you have any additional comments, updates, and anecdotes to share.
