The Nanaimo Historical Society encourages the community to attend this lecture about the 100th anniversary of the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike by Lynne Bowen, the author of Boss Whistle (1982), Three Dollar Dreams (1987), and Robert Dunsmuir, Laird of the Mines (1999).
The strike, one of the longest and most violent labour conflicts in Canadian history was the prime cause of misery for 3,500 miners and their families from Cumberland, Nanaimo, Extension, South Wellington and Ladysmith.
Rifts between strikers, working miners and strike breakers isolated and alienated members of the communities for decades to follow. Indeed, many a living memory may still recall first-hand accounts of conflict and the enduring tensions.
