The operation and history of the Nanaimo Concert Band

The Nanaimo Concert Band (NCB) is proud to be known as Canada’s oldest continuous operating concert band. The band is recognized as one of the finest groups in the country, and has attracted some of the most experienced music directors in Canada.

The Band has played for the Empire Days celebration throughout Nanaimo’s history, and has played for the opening of major public buildings, Royal visits, and of course Bathtub celebrations.  The band has played at every November 11th Armistice ceremony since World War One, without fail.

Our Band rehearses every Monday night at St. Andrews Church.  Currently we have over 55 members in the band.  All Musicians are unpaid volunteers.

Some of the other events that the band performs are, The Empire day parade, Concert in the park at Bowen Park, Festival of Trees, our Annual Fall and Spring Concert and our Christmas Charity Concert and the Canada Day Celebrations.

Our band at Christmas puts together small groups and plays charity concerts for retirement homes and other community functions.

The Nanaimo Concert Band had the honor of receiving the first ‘Excellence in Culture” Award presented by the City of Nanaimo in 1997.

This year the Band competed in the National Music Festival in Ottawa and brought home the ‘Gold’.  The City of Nanaimo honored each band member with a “ City of Nanaimo National Award’ medal at our concert for the opening of the Lion’s Pavilion.

History

The Band was established in 1872 and was founded and conducted by Reverend James Reynerd.  The first name given to the Band was “The Nanaimo Junior Brass Band” but very shortly there after it was renamed the “ Nanaimo Brass Band. The band’s second conductor was Mark Bate, who not only the conductor but the president of the band and the First Mayor of Nanaimo.

In 1889 the band was renamed the “Nanaimo Silver Cornet Band” for the reason that the instruments purchased from J.W Pepper in the United States where all silver plated.

In the 1920’s the band was known for their many honours they won in competitions and was nick named the “Nanaimo Silver Cornet Prize Band”.   It wasn’t until 1950 when it was renamed to the current name “ Nanaimo Concert Band”

Nanaimo Concert Band is Nanaimo’s community band.  The unique and important value the band brings to Nanaimo is that everything about the band involves the our community. The band members range from all ages and come from all walks of life and live and work in our community.  We cater to all types of audiences from our Port Theatre concerts to the free outdoor events.  Our band helps the local economy with concert hall rentals, advertising and promotions through local shops and media sources, local food banks with our charity concerts and musical instruments and accessories purchases, rental and repairs.  The local students get an educational benefit from having the band available to them to join and learn from their musical peers in the community.
