Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra: Sweet Strings

To kick off its 2025-26 season the now 37-member Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra will fill the performance halls, physically, and with the captivating sound of strings, presenting the program, “Sweet Strings”.

The program features Guest soloist, guitarist Alan Rinehart to play Ferdinando Carulli’s baroque “Guitar Concerto in E Minor, Opus 140”.

Rinehart has recently moved to Nanaimo bringing with him over 50 years experience as a professional Classical guitarist. Co-founder of the Vancouver Guitar Quartet, he has also released 10 solo CD’s, one of which was a top 10 of Classical Guitar Magazine. From 1983 – 2003 he was a faculty member of the Music Schools at Vancouver Community College and at the University of British Columbia.

Carulli was a titan of the classical guitar placing it as a serious instrument, in his day. This Concerto is a delightful and historically significant work; beautiful melodies and immense fun for the guitarist – perfect to give the guitar the grand stage it deserves.

The program begins with Vivaldi’s “Concerto Alla Rustica”, written around 1730 (about the time he wrote the Four Seasons), finding popularity in films and TV shows.

This will be followed by Tomaso Albinoni’s “Sinfonia a Cinq, Opus 2”, one of his better-known works published in 1722. The concert finale will feature 20th Century Swedish composer, Dag Wiren’s 1937 Serenade for String Orchestra. Wiren’s music is melodic and rhythmic, this work belonging to his earlier sprightly, outgoing and somewhat romantic material.
