Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra: Summer Serenade (Nanaimo)
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
For yet another engaging program, the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra will perform its season finale, Summer Serenades, Saturday June 7th, 7:30 pm at Brechin United Church and Sunday June 8th, 2:30 pm at St. Edmunds Anglican Church, Parksville.
Serenades developed through the Classical and Romantic Periods as sort of light symphonies, with tunefulness being more important than thematic development or dramatic intensity. Dvorak, Suk, Elgar and Tchaikovsky wrote Serenades for string orchestras, without the heaviness of wind instruments. The NCO will play the 2nd movement, the well-known Waltz from his 1880 Serenade for Strings, Op. 48. Not so well-known, the Viennese composer, Hans Gal (1890-1987) produced his Serenade in D, Op. 41 in 1932. Though modern in character this delightful work is totally beguiling and the main theme will easily become one of those little worms that play themselves over and over again in your mind. The Serenade No. 6 in D Major (Serenata Notturna) written in 1776 by Mozart is scored for 2 small orchestras and will feature guest percussionist, Terry Totzke.
The program also includes Dvoraks beautifully contemplative 1883 Nocturne in B Major for String Orchestra Op. 40, and Vivaldis Concerto in G Minor for Two Cellos, RV 531, featuring this years winners of the Concerto Competition for Young Musicians, cellists Tlell Mooney and Michael Jung, Tlell and Michael are both students of Helena Jung in Courtenay.
Tickets are $20 adults/ $10 students/ under 12, free at the Port Theatre Box Office or at the door. Refreshments will be available at intermission.
