How rewarding it is for the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra to have former students return as accomplished musicians to play as performing guests. Such is the case with Jasmine Mather who left Nanaimo to study violin at the University of Victoria. She returns as a member of the Wisteria String Quartet. (Note: another alumna is violinist Elyssa Lefurgey-Smith who plays with the Victoria Baroque Players.) The Wisteria String Quartet is quickly gaining recognition as a dynamic and refreshing chamber ensemble in the Greater Victoria area. Founded in the fall of 2016, the members of this string quartet have performed on stages across Vancouver Island, and are mentored by the Lafayette String Quartet, artists-in-residence at the University of Victoria. The Wisteria String Quartet features violinists Amy-Lynne Toth and Jasmine Mather, violist Maki Yamagata, and cellist Claire Dresselhuis, each of whom are currently majoring in performance at the University of Victoria. The Quartet will perform “Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47” for string quartet and string orchestra, composed by Edward Elgar in 1905 for the then newly-formed London Symphony Orchestra.

This spring concert, entitled, “Light Horizon”, includes three other works. St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst was composed in 1912 for St. Paul’s Girl’s School in London. This work has 4 movements, the final movement named “Dargason” for an old English folk tune, in which Holst deftly juxtaposes the melody for “Greensleeves”. I Crisantemi (the Chrysanthemum, written in one night to commemorate the death of the Duke of Savoy), composed originally for string quartet by Puccini in 1890, is a single, dark-hued, continuous movement. Puccini found his two liquid melodic ideas worthy enough to re-use in the last act of his 1893 opera, “Manon Lescaut”. Ancient Airs & Dances, Suite 3, composed by Respighi in 1932, is a work in 4 movements based on Renaissance lute music.
