Bellydancers converge on Nanaimo this June! For the 4th consecutive year, bellydancers from around the Island will showcase their latest moves & costumes in the year's "Bellydance Bazaar."

Organizers of the annual community fundraiser for Haven Society are already overwhelmed. According to Lynette Harper, "Last year we saw dancers from Victoria to Campbell River, and they wowed the audience made up of belly dancers & the general public. This year even more professional dancers, teachers & students have been generous in donating performances."

Co-organizer Genya Bonfield has assembled vendors with items "from glamorous costumes to street wear, funky jewellery & accessories from around the world." There will also be palm & tarot readers & delicious Middle Eastern snacks from Nanaimo's own Thirsty Camel restaurant.

New to this year's bazaar is an evening Solstice Spirit Celebration show featuring a variety of belly dancers from Vancouver Island & beyond. Tickets for the evening show can be purchased ahead of time or at the door. Another new feature is a morning workshop with well known professional dancer & teacher Rahma Haddad who joins us from Vancouver to facilitate a workshop on the 'Zar', a ritualistic dance originating in North Africa. This workshop will take place fro 10 a.m. to 11:30 before the Bazaar doors open to the general public.

Nanaimo's bely dance bazaar is a lively fun-filled day where visitors of all ages can enjoy music & dance in an informal, cross-cultural setting. Harper says, "St. Paul's Church hall will be transformed once again into a whirl of colour, sound & savory smells." It means an afternoon of free performances, workshops, and shopping for a very low admission fee.

The stage will feature the joy & diversity of Middle Eastern & Romani dance forms, presented by outstanding local dancers, including those who have earned regional & national recognition.

The evening show will include a drum/dance party for everyone to join in!!!!!
