Logging and Sketching Deep Sky Objects

Nelson Walker has been observing seriously since 1997, but until 2006, found that he was viewing much the same group of objects over and over again, no matter what the venue. In 2006, he resolved to complete the Messier list, and sketch each one. This led to what can only be described as a compulsion to sketch each object seen – his motto being “if I haven’t sketched and logged it, I haven’t seen it.” Since that time, he has sketched nearly a thousand objects, including all of the Herschel 400. He works entirely from published list of objects.

He hopes to convince you that an observing plan, a log book and sketching is the key to reinvigorating your observing and deepening your observing skills.

Mt Kobau Star Party

Fraser will talk a little about the history of the Mt Kobau Star Party, and give a first-hand account of this year’s last-minute evacuation that took place as the Testalinden fire threatened to block the only road off the mountain!
