Nanaimo Arts Council presents Distillations, a collaboration between painter Clare Singleton and poet Timothy Merrill, February 3 to Mar 2 at the NAC Gallery in Nanaimo North Town Centre.

The show opening will take place Thursday, February 6, from 7:00 � 9:00 pm.

There will be a poetry reading and art talk, with music by Paul Ruszel. Clare will also be giving a free workshop �Releasing Artist Blocks & Freeing Your Creativity�, Saturday, February 8 , 1:00 -4:00 pm at the Vancouver Island Regional Library, Harbourfront Branch. This workshop is for the artist and also for those who consider themselves �not artistic.� Participants will utilize gesture, watercolour, mindfulness, poetry and calligraphy to unleash creative blocks for all areas of endeavor and also offers an opportunity for exchange and creativity between participants.

Distillations is based on the book of the same name, a compilation of poems selected from eighteen of Timothy Merrill�s poetry publications. Produced over a thirty year period, his career as a writer was enhanced by his work as a carpenter, ferryman and journalist. Timothy and Clare selected the poems together.

Paintings are done on location by Clare Singleton and selected from her thirty year career as an artist to complement the poetry by Timothy. Teaching, nursing, adventuring and log salvage are some of Clare�s exiting endeavors. In Distillations Clare endeavored to pair poems with existing scenic work rather than specific illustrative work. The idea being that the viewer has an opportunity to bring their own interpretation to the material.

Clare and Timothy met at a mental health general meeting for Columbia House Society as guest artists in Nanaimo eight years ago. It is a time honoured tradition within the arts to support, encourage and exchange to promote growth in all the arts and in this interdisciplinary exchange both artists have found inspiration and courage to forge forward with their work.
