Tour of George Sawchuk’s Forest Gallery with Grant Shilling.
Saturday, November 28, 2015, 2pm
George Sawchuk (1927–2012) was a logger who, after losing part of a leg in an industrial accident, began working as an artist. Over thirty years he transformed a forest beside his Fanny Bay home into an outdoor gallery where objects interact with trees and signs creating an wonderful and immersive environment full of cultural and social references.
As part of Nanaimo Art Gallery's exhibition Booming Grounds, join us for a walking tour of George Sawchuk’s Forest Gallery led by writer and Curator Grant Shilling. Shilling is currently working on a major publication about Sawchuk’s life and work, and will share his insights with us.
Meet at: 372 Bates Drive, Fanny Bay, BC Please Park in the empty lot next to the property, or contact the gallery to arrange a ride. Boots are recommended. Admission $10 | Please register in advance at the gallery or call 250 754 1750 Photograph taken in George Sawchuk’s Forest in 1988 by Bob Cain.
