Art Lab Workshops | Acrylic Painting Workshops Macro Flora Explorations with Yvonne Vander Kooi Thursday, February 25 9:30 am to 4:30 pm $85 Gallery Members | $95 Non Members (Maximum 10 participants) To register call Nanaimo Art Gallery at 250.754.1750 Much of Yvonne Vander Kooi's work explores the elegant detail of mosses and lichens found in our forest floor and canopy. Forest walks, selecting and photographing various specimens and researching indigenous plants are important elements of her artistic practice. In her studio, these microscopic elements are reworked in larger scale becoming abstracted paintings that draw upon the intricacies of plant life in our local rain forests and engage the visceral properties paint. In this workshop, the forest flora will inform our work. We will familiarize ourselves with the subject matter through a range of drawing and painting methods in small and large format. These exercises will be the starting point for explorations in paint on a large canvas (scraping, layering, glazing, printing). Once the aspects of nature are established in the artwork, other considerations will be covered: negative space, additive and subtractive painting, and risk taking. Yvonne will introduce the work of various contemporary artists to deepen our understanding of this vast and inspiring trajectory in art which is rooted at our doorstep!

Both beginners and artists with experience are invited to participate.

Supply List: •2-3 of your favourite brushes (including 2" flat) •minimum 2' x 2' square canvas (or cradle if preferred) •any photos that you've taken or specimens from the forest floor (indigenous)
