Gestural Portraiture - Let Loose with Yvonne Vander Kooi Thursday, March 3 9:30am to 4:30pm $85 Gallery Members | $95 Non Members (Maximum 10 participants)

Yvonne Vander Kooi's recent body of work is a series of semi-abstract portraits that focus on experimentation, the materiality of paint and the psychology of children. Initially representational, the work becomes abstracted as she looks for ways to invigorate it with an innovative approach to paint. This is accomplished through a process of drawing and gestural painting on a non-absorbent surface allowing the natural qualities of paint to factor into the outcome. To start, we will work from life and from photographs, and embark on a series of exercises to "loosen up". Utilizing a limited palette, we will create a series of small abstract works focusing on play and experimentation. In another exercise, use your own photos and drawings as a jumping off point and try your hand at watery acrylics on yupo paper (a non-absorbent paper that provides unexpected results). These initial experimentations will come together in your final piece. Incorporating an awareness of the elements of design and the unpredictable nature of paint should result in satisfying and surprising paintings! Throughout the day we will learn about various contemporary painters that will inspire and give us new ideas and approaches to painting.

Both beginners and artists with experience are invited to participate.

Supply List: •2-3 of your favourite brushes (including 2" flat) •minimum 2' x 2' square canvas (or cradle if preferred) •a few photo portraits (close up, preferrably black & white, photocopier available) •yupo paper (minimum 3 sheets 9" x 12") All other supplies included.
