Saturday Studio in Art Lab Unique art classes and activities for children ages 5-11 10:30am until noon on select Saturdays at Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Art Lab!

If you have a LEAP card your child may be eligible for a bursary! Two LEAP spots are available each week; one per family. Each family is welcome to use up to 2 LEAP spots per month. Maximum program enrolment is 16 students. All phone reservations must be paid prior to 5 pm the Friday before Saturday Studio. Walk-in payments are accepted until 10:15am Saturday if there is still space.

Saturday, June 6 | En Plein Air #1: At the Museum

En Plein Air is a French phrase which means 'in the open air'—the goal was to take the artist out of the studio and into the scenic. So today we will pack up our pencils and pastels and take them for a stroll down the road to the Nanaimo Museum where we will take a drawing tour of the museum! So come take an art jaunt with us!

Saturday, June 13 | Merry Masque Making

Using the beautiful Venetian mask as inspiration, at this Saturday Studio you will build your very own version of the mask using gypson plaster strips. Once your mask is dry, personalize it with feathers, paint, and shiny gems! Don't forget to wear your hair back!

Saturday, June 20 | En Plein Air #2: At the Bastion

Towers and cannons and bagpipes, oh my! Today we take another art jaunt, this time to the oldest structure in Nanaimo—the Bastion! Using oil and chalk pastels, we'll take advantage of one of the most famous views in Nanaimo!

Saturday, June 27 | En Plein Air #3: At the Park

Today we'll be heading to where land meets sea at Maffeo Sutton Park. With pastels as our first medium, we will start by sketching some bay and tidal pool views. Then, using rocks and driftwood as our next medium, we'll create some public art sculptures too!
