Saturday Studio – Art classes for kids! Art Lab offers two Saturday Studio sessions tailored to kids ages 5-7 and 8-12.

Participants will connect with artists, experiment with materials, learn new techniques, and have fun with art making.

Every Saturday 9:30 – 10:30 am Ages 5-7

11:00 am – 12:30 pm Ages 8-12

Saturday, February 6 – Painting the Landscape

Inspired by fire watcher Robert Guest’s painting Adam’s Creek Fire Lookout Cabin, 1940, in the current exhibition, we too will paint with acrylics on large canvas our own interpretation of the landscape. We will learn about traditional and contemporary painting techniques such as layering, scraping, impasto, colour mixing, and more!

Saturday, February 13 – Valens Tree Rings!

In the spirit of our current exhibition Silva Part II - Booming Grounds and Valentini Diem, we will create strong, colourful, whimsical gifts for friends and family using the raw materials of the forest industry. With love, a dash of latin and a wee bit of elbow grease, we will sand, drill holes, design, and embellish wood slices cut from the trees and branches of our forests.

Saturday, February 20 – Portraits of a Stick with Ron Tran

This Saturday Studio join artist Ron Tran and create artworks in a range of materials. Students will make portraits inspired by a significant object in the artist’s collection. All works created will be displayed in the Gallery as part of Ron’s exhibition Somewhat Mine: A Nanaimo Retrospective and be returned to the students after the exhibition.

This special Saturday Studio is free of charge, first come, first serve, maximum 12 students per class.

Saturday, February 27 – Portrait Print

Join us for some printmaking fun to create zany graphic portraits in black, white and colour. Using brayers, ink, plexi glass and styrofoam trays, we will use tools to carve out our image while learning about positive and negative space, composition, line and texture with interesting and immediate results!
