Art Lab offers two Saturday Studio sessions tailored to kids ages 5-7 and 8-12. Participants will connect with artists, experiment with materials, learn new techniques, and have fun with art making.

March 3 - Edges, Colour, Geometry and Abstraction

Eleanor King's wall mural Harbour Forest in the gallery is an exciting visual of colour, geometry and abstraction based on Nanaimo's geography using Google Earth. Visiting artist Kaylea Reeve will teach hard edge abstraction techniques with acrylic paint, tape and scrapers to create geometric patterns based on land, sea and cityscapes of Nanaimo!

March 10 - Flotsam and Jetsam Watercolours

Inspired by Genevieve Robertson's arresting works on paper using seawater, bitumen and gouache we will paint images of found materials from the seashore as a way of listening to the sea. We will play and experiment with watercolour, salt and oil to discover the movement and properties of these materials as they collide and interact on paper.

March 17 - Nuwilum Yuqwiqwulus (Welcome Spring)

"Nuwilum Yuqwiqwulus" means "welcome spring" in our local indigenous Hul'q'umi'num. We will add playful text to colourful paper to create banners to welcome Spring in our homes or in our yards.

March 24 - Robin Song

Arlene will share the origin story of her Kitsumkalum community that tell the unique ties the community has with Robin and the messages of hope that continue to inspire. We will also learn the word for Robin in our local indigenous Hul’q’umi’num. Using black craft paper we will cut out robin shapes and glue tissue paper to create unique suncatchers that encourage and welcome the return of our Robin friends at this time of year.

Two LEAP spots are available each week; one per family. Each family is welcome to use up to 2 LEAP spots per month.

Maximum program enrolment is 12 students. All phone reservations must be paid prior to 5 pm the Friday before Saturday Studio.

Walk-in payments are accepted until 9:15am Saturday, if space allows.
