Are you between the ages of 5 and 11? Do you love to play, experiment and make art?

Join us on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm $12 per child / $18 for two siblings

Do you have a LEAP card? Your child may be eligible for a bursary Location: Art Lab at Nanaimo Art Gallery, 150 Commercial Street Maximum program enrolment is 16 students. All phone reservations must be paid prior to 5 pm the Friday before Saturday Studio. Walk-in payments are accepted until 10:15am Saturday if there is still space.

Saturday, March 7 - Playing with Pattern

This week at Saturday Studio we’ll be patterning animal silhouettes in the style of Gustav Klimt. Using black markers, experiment with form and texture by creating a cacophony of patterns, whirls, curls, and swirls to fill in your stylized animal base. We’ll even pop in a punch or two of gold leaf for good measure!

Saturday, March 14 - Assemblage Dioramas

Today we will be merging the worlds of diorama and assemblage art into one. Inspired by the monochromatic works of artist, Louise Nevelson, we will be creating assemblage dioramas by arranging and gluing down found objects and painting the finished product one solid colour.

Saturday, March 21 - Trip into Spring

This week at Saturday Studio we’ll be creating a Spring-themed triptych painting. Triptychs are hinged panel paintings that were used as a standard format for early Christian altar paintings. With the work of artist Jan Van Eyck serving as our inspiration, we will experiment with paint to create vibrant Spring scenes to adorn the inside of your triptych. So let’s open the doors and welcome in a new season!

Saturday, March 28 - Pastel Fish

Dive into deep, dark waters this week and bring forth some colourful, fishy, fun with oil pastels. Using black cardstock paper as our base, we will experiment with colour and texture, as well as learn how to layer pastels. So come along and bring your fish vividly to life using long, lazy sweeps across the page, and strong, bold lines!
