BIRDERS’ NIGHT

Mobbing behaviour: when birds harass their predators Many of us have noticed crows surrounding an owl while cawing raucously or a gull pursuing an eagle and have wondered why they do this? This behaviour, called ‘mobbing’, is quite widespread among birds (and some other animals too). It raises many questions. Is it as risky as it appears? What are the benefits of taking such risks? How do they know which species to mob? Don Kramer, a retired behavioural ecologist (McGill University, Department of Biology) who returned to B.C. following his retirement and has been a member of the VNHS ever since, will discuss what is known about these questions and more. The presentation will begin after announcements and items of general interest. Come early to socialize!
