Merville Turns One Hundred
The Comox Valley is celebrating a big birthday this September 27, 28 and 29, when the community of Merville will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary. In the spring of 1919 the Merville Soldier Settlement community was officially formed with land grants being offered to returning First World War veterans. In the fall of 1919, Edward, the Prince of Wales, made a visit to the community and even planted a tree to commemorate the occasion. The Big Yellow Merville hall will be the epicenter of the celebration and it will host a whoop up party for one and all to celebrate the centennial. The blue, 104 year old “Stolen Church” will be open and the grounds around the buildings landscaped.
Contact has been made with the Mayor of the town of Merville au bois, France, the town that Merville was named after, and the Mayor’s daughter will be coming to celebrate. An original play on Merville has been created by playwright, Kymme Patrick, and it will be staged on Friday night, September 27, and on Saturday afternoon, September 28. As well, on Saturday afternoon, there will be a Centennial Tea to celebrate Merville settler families and seniors. Saturday night the Big Yellow hall will reverberate with the music of an all night dance party. Sunday, September 29, is the annual Heritage Fall Fair, from 1:00 to 5pm. Come and enjoy a Farmers’ Market; games for youth like Sack Races, Three Legged Races and Egg on Spoon Races; and yummy food from the kitchen. And, of course, there’s the annual Tug ‘o’ War between Merville and Black Creek. Merville has won, 2 out of 3! Who will win this year? Sunday night, get ready for a dynamic concert with all sorts of musicians from around the area. Maybe some fireworks?? Yes, it is time to celebrate the richness of the Comox Valley and to wish Merville a Happy Birthday!
