Family Caregiver Week in BC is May 5 to 11th.

So what? It is a time when the one in four citizens of BC who are presently looking after an adult who needs help to get through the day can pat themselves on the back for what they do.

But it takes more than a backpat, doesn't it?

Caregivers need to have more recognition, respect and support for what they are doing as a key part of BC's health system.

As an author of a book about being a caregiver for my parents as they slowly dwindled to the end of their lives, I know how tough this job can be. And how transformative. Everyone who takes this journey is changed forever.

Janet Dunnett is an author from Qualicum Beach who is working to raise the voice of caregivers, and trigger an avalanche of caregiver stories boldly shared. It is the way that the culture of care in BC will evolve. Stories are the only way! Come share yours!
