Master Watercolourist Carol Evans captures the mystery and magic of our coast like an Old Master.

When you see oil paintings by the old masters, you have to marvel at the way they painted so you could see right through objects, like a chiffon curtain, to what was behind them. That kind of craftsmanship isn't seen much anymore.

Carol Evans has it: more amazingly, she does it with watercolours, an unforgiving medium if ever there was one. You can scrape off or paint over oils. No such luck with watercolours. It is no wonder she's known as a master watercolourist. After three decades of dedication, her paintings glow with intense colours and the amazing subtleties of light that have become her trademarks.

She often paints BC's coastline - the focus of her third and latest book of paintings, The Shores We Call Home: The Art of Carol Evans. Just released by Harbour Publishing, it is a collection of 80 full-colour reproductions of Carol's most recent watercolours, many of them about the West Coast, making us see that we live in a magic place unlike anywhere else on earth. Her publisher, Howard White says Carol's work makes the hairs on his neck stand on end.

The book - and Carol's paintings - have become, as they say, hot. Her book is #2 on this year's 'Best of BC' list compiled by the Association of Book Publishers of B.C. And when she appeared in Sidney for a book signing a few weeks ago, close to 300 people queued for nearly three hours.

In the book foreword, Arthur Black writes: "Carol Evans is as beautiful in person as she is on canvas. She paints like an angel and laughs like Diamond Tooth Gertie. She paints water with astonishing clarity and a magical perfection that can make your heart do backflips. She calls it 'releasing the light'."

Full size samples of Carol Evans' art are also on display at the gallery as well as soft and hard cover versions of her book. Gallery owner Bruce Roger invites everyone who would like to meet Carol, see her work, or have her sign a book to join them. "Carol lets you look into the water, all the way", he says. "Suddenly you are on the beach with her, you can almost reach down into the water and pick up a shell."

If you are ready to have the hairs on your neck stand on end, visit Carol's web site at carolevans.com and drop in to the gallery for coffee and conversation.
