Its that time again. MEC Victoria is proud to announce that our 3rd Annual MEC Snowfest will be taking place on Saturday November 9 2013. MEC Snowfest is our annual celebration of all things Snowrelated.
It is an event where you can meet your local community groups, clubs, vendors and talk about playing in the snow. Also returning this year will be our Snow Swap where you can score some AWESOME deals on gear that can get you outside. The day will be filled with information clinics, video presentations, prize draws and giveaways including lift tickets to Mt. Washington and some face painting for the little folks. The festival will be running from 10:00am until 5:00pm. We will also be screening Norm Hanns film STAND in the evening at 7:00pm so feel free to pop in for some popcorn and an incredible SUP experience.

Presenters
Raincoast Conservation Foundation (raincoast.org) teamed up with Patagonia, its surf team and Canadian surfing phenom, Peter Devries, for an adventure. Groundswell emerged. This very unique short documentary features not only world-class surfing in never-before-surfed breaks in the Great Bear Rainforest but also the voices of the indigenous people who are standing up to protect their way of life from the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. Join Chris Darimont - Raincoast's director of science, professor at UVic and aging surfer - as he presents the film.
Island Alpine Guides,' Jan Neuspiel, will share the best touring destinations in the Island Alps; what makes them good destinations, specifics about when the best times to do them, as well as a whole bunch of route beta and safety beta about them with relation to avalanche hazard. The areas that are presented are sure to be ones that have Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale ratings done. He will integrate the use of the Avaluator decision making tool by showing how it can be used to make trip planning decisions in these areas.
Wilderness Trekking founder, Mick Bromely, joins us fresh off a high alpine trek in the Sacred Tsum Valley of Nepal; this area was just recently opened to the public in 2007. The valleys remote land boasts of magnificent mountain scenery, ancient Tibetan Buddhist settlements and a challenging pass crossing, ensuring us a total Himalayan experience!
Screening of the award winning documentary STAND - Norm Hann take us on an epic journey through coastal BC to share the threat of the proposed Enbridge Pipeline. *Entrance by donation at the door. *Doors open at 6:30pm.
Information Clinics
Since we live in Victoria, we will not only have great clinics on snowsports:
Intro to Snowshoeing (12:30pm tp 1:30pm) - whether you're treading up a snowy mountain or enjoying a brisk walk in the backcountry, here's an info session to help you make fast tracks.
Backcountry Camping (2:30pm to 3:30pm) - Perfect for folks who are keen to do some winter over-nighters, but who dont yet have the requisite experience to do so with confidence. This workshop will send you on your way.
But we will also have clinics that suit our west coast winter:
Winter Cycling (11:30am to 12:30pm) - Learn how to keep the rubber to the road this winter. One of the many benefits of living in Victoria is that winter does not mean you have to put the bike away. With the proper layers, and some helpful tips, you can keep cycling all through the winter. Learn about the joys of layering and special safety considerations and keep your bike on the road year-round.
Winter Running - (3:30pm to 4:30pm) - Love running outdoors and don't want to take your training to the treadmill? If you live in Victoria, you don't have to! Join Katie to learn more about running in the Victoria's weather conditions. Learn how to dress, what to eat, and how to stay safe as the days get shorter and colder.
And of coursethere will be hot chocolate for EVERYONE!!
See you there!
