Mbira Spirit, the artist and educator duo of Amy and Tafadzwa, perform at the Duncan Showroom on January 1.

Tafadzwa is from Zimbabwe, Africa and came to Canada as a Performing Artist.
He grew up in a small village where singing, dancing, drumming and music were a part of everyday life. His passion for mbira came from his Father and the more he learned it, the more he was driven to share it. The mbira is a small thumb piano that sits inside a round gourd called a deze. It is an ancient instrument and has a magical sound. Tafadzwa travelled around Zimbabwe to play, learn, perform and share his music with both young and old. He has been well received in Canada sharing his songs, stories and music with numerous Elementary Schools and various events on Vancouver Island. Music has no borders and it is a universal language for all to enjoy!

Amy is from Vancouver Island and began her music journey 9 years ago when she was introduced to the marimba. Being a music teacher in the public school system, she began introducing marimbas into her program and has had great success. Her passion to learn more about marimba led her to discovering not only the mbira, but also learning more about Zimbabwe’s language, culture and traditions. Her growing and insatiable passion to learn more about mbira finally took her to Zimbabwe in the Spring of 2012. There she studied mbira, and was immersed in Zimbabwean music, culture and traditions. It was in Zimbabwe that she also met Tafadzwa and invited him to Canada.

Together they are now married and making beautiful music performing in various locations on the Island. They are also excited for the release of their first CD Masarakufa!
