Berner, Mark and Demeanor Unite to Fight Despair In the ongoing battle to fight off despair, it is recommended to gather in groups and sing.

To be even more successful in your fight, try to find musicians who love to collaborate with each other. The resulting chaos should propel the listener as far away from despair as possible.

Now in their third year with the May 3 Way, Geoff Berner, Carolyn Mark and Kris Demeanor are proof positive of the joy that can be created. These three are incredibly comfortable with each other and have such a huge diversity of sound that they sparkle with energy. With each of their performances they produce the excitement of a music festival’s songwriters circle.

Singer/songwriter/accordionist/novelist Geoff Berner’s music combines klezmer, punk, political satire, and Balkan dance rhythms. He writes sharp, literate songs that make you want to weep, laugh, grind your teeth, or kick out a window – often all at the same time. He says his latest album We Are Going To Bremen To Be Musicians is “meant to be powerful cheering-up medicine that you don’t have to turn your brain off for.”

Carolyn Mark started singing with all girl punk-surf-art-rock band, The Vinaigrettes in Victoria. From there she moved into a more country vein but continued working with others through tribute, collaboration and duet albums. Mark's great alt-country tunes and ribald razor-sharp wit can be both hilarious and heartbreaking in a single twang. She is currently working on a new album titled Come! Back! Special!

Kris Demeanor is a poet/singer/songwriter born and raised in Calgary but with family connections to Salt Spring. He was Calgary’s first poet laureate from 2012 to 2014. Recently Kris collaborated with Ian Tyson on the songs “Jughound Ronnie” and “The Flood” for Tyson’s latest album Carnero Vaquero. His music draws on classic folk story telling, spoken word/rap, and shameless pop, which complicates things for all involved and makes everything more interesting.

Join the Whiskey Rabbi, the Boozy Chanteuse and the Jester of Mordor for an evening of cheer. The interplay between these three is better than anything you can find on TV or the Internet. They will deliver strategies to fend off despair through songs about love, redemption and pure Schadenfreude.
