Back by popular demand, cellist Ariel Barnes and pianist Sarah Hagen bring their intricate and intense collaboration to the Sid for the finale concert of the 2011/2012 Mattina Musica season. Their programme includes Debussy's sublime Cello Sonata as well as the profound final Beethoven sonata, two pieces which display the breathtaking fusion of cello and piano.

Italian for Morning Music, Mattina Musica is a series of 4 concerts, each taking place on a Monday morning. Patrons are invited to meet in the Sid lobby at 10 am for tea, coffee and conversation before the 10:30 am concert. Can you think of a better way to spend a Monday morning?

Ariel Barnes - cello

His luscious tone and technical prowess marks him as a musician of real stature."
The Vancouver Sun

Cellist Ariel Barnes enjoys a diverse career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Over the past several years, he has performed to great acclaim in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Equally comfortable in genres of music ranging from the baroque to modern times, his performances have included evenings of Mozarts chamber music to contemporary solo cello recitals. As an avid chamber musician, he has enjoyed appearances at MusicFest Vancouver, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Mendocino Music Festival, Music at Port Milford, and Northern Lights Music Festival.

Along with colleagues Mary Sokol-Brown and Andrew Brown, Ariel is a member of Trio Accord, a Vancouver-based string trio which has been praised for its enchanting, exhilarating, and extremely moving performances. Released in the fall of 2008, Trio Accords debut recording on Skylark Records of J.S. Bachs Goldberg Variations was nominated for Classical Record of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

He is currently Principal Cello of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, a member of The Turning Point Ensemble and National Broadcast Orchestra. Ariels recordings can be heard on ATMA Classique, Skylark Records, Universal Music, 604 Records, Centrediscs, CBC Radio (including Espace Musique), CBC Television, Integrity Music, Za Discs, Disney Films, and Funktopus Records. His principal teachers have included Daniel Domb at the University of Toronto, Bruce Uchimura at Western Michigan University, Craig Weaver of the Seattle Symphony, and Eric Wilson at the University of British Columbia. In addition, he has received coaching from Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Janos Starker, Lawrence Lesser, Lorand Fenyves, and members of the Guarneri, Cleveland, Orford, and St. Lawrence String Quartets.

Cellist Ariel Barnes, gave the nights most mesmerizing musical experience... The epic nature of this composition was expressed ideally by Ariels dazzling technique and personal connection. The Live Music Report, Toronto, Ontario

Sarah Hagen - piano

"A rarity of musical excellence, technical ease and tonal purity," pianist Sarah Hagen is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing in concerts across Canada as well as in the United States, France, Italy, Germany and Sweden. Her interpretations have been described as "outstandingly inventive," performed with "infinite skill."

A visionary and an idealist, Sarah's performances are often conceptually innovative, involving photography, dance and theatre. Her motivation is the belief that music has the power to be a window into our souls regardless of age or knowledge. She is the Artistic Director for Pro'ject Sound, a performance project involving live piano with large-scale projected images. She is also an avid collaborator, reveling in the friendships and stimulation that abound in chamber music. Sarah's upcoming season includes performances in Sweden, Spain and northern BC, as well as a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Victoria Symphony.
