Join us at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia for good books and great conversations! This month we will be discussing Marlyn Horsdals The Judge and the Lady, a historical fiction set in late-nineteenth-century Victoria.
After being banished from London for her scandalous behaviour, main character Eleanor Wentworth is sent to Victoria. It is here that Eleanor meets Matthew Baillie Begbie, BCs first chief justice and an eligible bachelor. Horsdals story follows these individuals through adventure and scandal in this formative period in Victorias history.
The Maritime Museums Book Club will discuss Horsdals book and the questions about class, gender, and cultural politics that it raises. It will also celebrate 2014 as the 125th anniversary of the BC Supreme Courthouse building, Begbies former workplace and the current location of the Maritime Museum of BC.
