Dive into a chapter of the history of marine mammals in the region on March 20 at the Maritime Heritage Centre at 7 p.m.

From their peaceful coexistence with the First Nations people for millennia to their near extinction by uncontrolled exploitation following the arrival of Europeans to how they are fairing now.

John Ford, marine mammal research scientist at the Pacific Biological Station Fisheries and Oceans Canada, will take us on an undersea tour through history. Ford has studied killer whales since the 70s. He joined the Pacific Biological Station as head of the Cetacean Research Program in 2001. Since then he has broadened his studies to include the assessment of conservation statues of marine mammals and turtles off the Pacific coast that are listed until the Species-at-Risk Act. He is considered one of Canada’s foremost marine mammal researchers and has published numerous articles and books on his research. His most recent book written for the Royal BC Museum, Marine Mammals of British Columbia, will be available for purchase at the event.
