Mapping What's Important to Community

Community mapping enables people to capture the power of place and the potential for change. It is used worldwide as a hands-on educational, planning and research tool for participatory and sustainable community development. Vancouver Island residents, including students and First Nations communities, have created many community mapping projects and products over the past 15 years. VIU has joined other island campuses as part of VICRA - the Vancouver Island Community Research Alliance - to grow this tool as a commonly-held and used resource focused on student and community-based engagement.

Co-presenters Ken Josephson and Maeve Lydon are coordinators of the UVIC- Community Mapping Collaboratory (mapping.uvic.ca). Ken is a cartographer and graphic designer based in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Department of Geography at UVIC and Maeve is the Associate Director of the Office of Community Based Research with a background in community and international development and social change. The presentation will include how they integrate community mapping into student curriculum, community projects and field work while building strong planning and development partnerships with local governments, neighborhoods, community organizations and the voluntary sector. They will also share their global connection acting as a Canadian hub/resource for the Green Map System (www.greenmap.org) which wants to increase its higher education collaborations. Maeve is on Green Map's international advisory and Ken has led the production of many of the maps that are shared and displayed worldwide alongside the more than 750 print and on-line green mapping initiatives.

The workshop will share the story and examples of community mapping, share hands on tools and applications and facilitate a conversation about how VIU and campuses can become more involved in the regional and global mapping networks. Building 355 is located above the Library, with the nearest parking located to the north of the Library. All parking requires payment.
