Traditionally, chine-collé is defined as a method of infusing with glue a fine delicate rice paper onto heavier printmaker’s paper. The two papers with an inked etching plate are passed through an etching press at the same time, allowing a printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface. In this modern approach to collé, we will print inkjet images onto the rice paper (eliminating the inked plated) before using the press to adhere this fine paper to a heavier sheet of paper.

Printing on a thin japanese paper and the use of the chine-collé technique enriches the image, allowing for finer details and a unique dimension to be added to your images. This technique can also be a  way to introduce colour, texture and collage elements to your images.

We will make several prints during the workshop and will also create a handmade portfolio that you can bring your prints home in.
 
In advance of the workshop, please send us 2 images in advance  - no larger than 4x6, B&W. Files can be emailed to [email protected] by January 6th.

We will have your two images pre-printed multiple times for you to experiment with during the workshop. We will also have other images & papers available for you to use.
