Seventeenth century travellers returning to Europe, from adventures in the Middle East, bought back colourful stone-like papers that were hand bound as books called  'Alba Amicoium' which translates to 'Books of Friendship'.

We'll begin the day in the studio making own our marbleized papers. Marbling is an ancient printmaking technique where ink is floated on a prepared surface and then carefully transferred to the paper. The resulting designs are unique mono prints that can be used in a variety of applications and were popular to use as end-sheets in books as far back as the 16th century. Everyone will make at least two marbled sheets.

Then we'll finish off the workshop making two simple books. The first a concertina or folded book. Then using a simple pamphlet stitch, we will sew our own 'books of friendship' using your own marbleized papers as covers.

You will bring able to bring home at least one full sheet of marbleized paper to create your own books at home, plus the two books you make in class.
