For the first time on Vancouver Island, world-renowned female percussion group, the Red Poppy Ladies, will perform at the Port Theatre – as part of the "2016 Lunar New Year Gala – ‘Mulan’ Percussion Musical" event, hosted by the Nanaimo Chinese Cultural Society.
The Red Poppy Ladies’ drumming group was founded in 2000, the first percussion group in China to be comprised solely of female performers. The Red Poppy Ladies artfully blend traditional Kung Fu techniques, dancing and uniquely compelling percussion performances. Their diverse rhythmic drumming styles are framed by rich visual backdrops, brilliantly reinterpreting an ancient, dramatic tale. This talented group has successful performed over 2,500 times in countries worldwide, including the USA, England, Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Kuwait, Australia and China.
The story of “Mulan” is about a Chinese peasant girl (Mulan HUA), who disguises herself as a man to take her ailing father’s place as a soldier in the Emperor’s war against the Huns. After years of concealing her true identity, Mulan’s secret is finally revealed and she becomes widely revered for her courage and loyalty. This legend incorporates the traditional Chinese values of love, justice, loyalty and filial duty, whose message of leadership, bravery and family devotion strike a profound chord with today’s audiences.
Featuring a half hour traditional singing, dancing and speeches from local art groups, PLUS this one-and-only 1.5 hour "Mulan percussion musical", this Feb 5th Lunar New Year event is sure to have the audience laughing, tapping their feet, and perhaps even shedding a tear or two. It is not to be missed! Please come out and enjoy a spectacular night, and let us to celebrate this upcoming 2016 lunar Year of the Monkey!
