Classical Exciting!
Steinway Artist and critically acclaimed Canadian pianist Lorraine Min has dazzled audiences worldwide with her poetic artistry and brilliant virtuosity. Cited by the New York Times for her “impeccable phrase-shaping (and) crystalline sound,” and by the Washington Post for her “admirable technique,” Min has performed extensively throughout Canada and the US, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. She has performed solo recitals and has made concerto appearances in some of the world’s most important concert halls such as New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre and Chan Centre. A dynamic chamber musician, she has performed frequently in North America including at the Ravinia and Tanglewood Festivals, in Europe, throughout Australia, and India. She can be heard regularly on CBC and ABC (Australian) Radio. Min was the highest-ranking Canadian pianist at age 19 in the Leeds and the Busoni and laureate in the Van Cliburn competitions. Born in Victoria and raised in Vancouver, BC, Min received her Masters and Doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School. She is currently recording the complete Chopin Piano Concerti with the Emily Carr String Quartet to be released in early 2015.
CBC calls Brian Yoon “Canada’s next cello superstar”. His most notable awards include First Prize at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition, and the prize for the best performance of a Canadian work at the 2012 Stepping Stone Competition. As a soloist, Yoon has performed with orchestras across Canada. His performance of Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 at the National Arts Centre was praised by the Ottawa Citizen as an “impressive account” with “exquisite phrasing”. In 2012, he completed a 10-concert national tour presenting a program focused on Canadian works. Recent summers have included solo and chamber music performances in Italy. Yoon’s primary teachers include Judith Fraser (Vancouver Academy of Music), Paul Marleyn (University of Ottawa) and Desmond Hoebig (Rice University). He has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation. Brian Yoon is currently the principal cellist of the Victoria Symphony.
Lorraine and Brian will play selections by Bach, Schumann, Beethoven and Popper.
