Looking Back at Extension BC
The quiet streets of Extension are scattered with old miners' homes and buildings, backdropping the townsite are hills of coal slag former residents dug from the shafts beneath. The ageing structures are tenuous touchstones, offering glimpses back into the lives and times of the once thriving community.
Founded in the late 1890s, Extension was originally home to coal miners and farmers -- as well as strikers, rioters, and communists. At the peak of its development, Extension had a post office, school, churches, cultural halls, hotels and other businesses. Culturally diverse, the community had residents representing over a dozen countries, including a Chinatown and a significant number of African-American residents.
The Nanaimo Historical Society invites the public to join Aimee Greenaway, Curator at the Nanaimo Museum, for a presentation based research for the Extension BC: Divided in Solidarity feature museum exhibition from spring 2018. Her presentation will focus on Extension families and life in the community, including photos spanning nearly 120 years that are held in private collections.
Aimee grew up in Extension and was the fourth generation of her family to reside there. ###
