In this talk, richly illustrated with rare photos and maps, popular historian Richard Mackie will follow the Comox Logging & Railway Company as it logged 60,000 acres of Douglas-fir forest to the north of Courtenay and at Comox Lake in the era of highlead logging, 1910-1945.
Before trucks and chainsaws, Comox Logging's workforce of 400 men used crosscut saws, donkeys, skidders, railways, cherry pickers, and steam locomotives to log "the flats" north of Courtenay.
Mackie will also reflect on the accuracy and charm of Bus Griffiths 1978 classic "Now You're Logging" reprinted this year for its 35th Anniversary Edition by Harbour Publishing. A copy of "Now Youre Logging" will be awarded as a door prize to one lucky audience member.
Following the lecture, Mackie will be on hand to sign copies of his books. This award-winning author has composed a number of Comox Valley history books including "The Wilderness Profound", "Island Timber" and "Mountain Timber".
