Live Latin Music Night with Los Chiwahwahs

Looking for traditional? Look elsewhere. Los Chiwahwahs are not your typical rock band or your typical Latin band but rather a dynamite combination of both and oh so much more.
In a night, they can blast through a repertoire of cumbia-pop, rock, reggaeton, Latin-soul, slick Santana-style grooves and even Cuban son with a signature twist. While their name may conjure up an equally irresistible/ridiculous image of Mexican lapdogs rocking out on guitars with wah-wah pedals, the five members that form Los Chiwahwahs claim they are all humble musicians of the human species with not one amongst them being of any notable pedigree. These musicians are, however, quite established talents in the Comox Valley and have some significant history working together.
All formed part of Luzna – the Latin-soul orchestra that first surfaced on the local scene in 2008. The two in the group with the longest history working together are Jim ‘Juancito” Papp, and Michael ‘Wisconsin’ Johnson who sing and play guitars and percussion in Los Chiwahwahs. On keyboards is Kelly ‘Tomasa’ Thomas while Oscar Robles Diaz, originally from Mexico City, is on drum-kit and vocals. ‘Britt de la Isla’ (Britt Bowman) is on bass. Not all, but the majority of Los Chiwahwahs songs are sung in Spanish. And because much of the music has some definite Latin groove happening, you may find yourself at times salsa-stepping or chachacha-ing it up.
Some smoking-hot gringo-style guitar going on at times might even make you feel like you’re being whisked off on a Woodstock trip. If this sounds like your cup of tea, or tequila –whichever your preference – consider coming out, as this promises to be a fun-filled night!
