Linden Traditions: Choral Classics
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
The Linden Singers of Victoria is pleased to present a selection of choral classics, old and new, with Emily Carr String Quartet and guest soloists Adam Dyjach, tenor, Kyron Basu, baritone, and Jessica Wagner, soprano.
This concert presents the familiar, rich harmonies of Schubert's Mass in G, Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus and Brahms' Zigeunerlieder, along with the equally beautiful and lush haunting melodies of Ola Gjeilo.
Written when he was just 18, Schubert’s Mass in G was completed in under a week in 1815. It is modestly scored, requiring only a string orchestra and organ in addition to soloists and choir, but is among the most popular settings of the mass ordinary with its majestic blend of choral and orchestral sounds and pleasing lyrical expression.
In 1791, just 6 months before his death, Mozart wrote Ave Verum Corpus for a friend at St Stephan’s in Baden bei Wien, where Mozart's wife was in a spa awaiting the birth of their 6th child. The peacefulness of the place and the hopefulness of the time are tempered by a sense of resignation and even foreboding, in this well known and beloved work.
The Linden Singers, along with thousands of choirs and their audiences, love the sumptuous harmonies of Ola Gjeilo. He is a choral master whose compositions soothe the soul with their exquisite beauty and melodic textures. It is no wonder Gjeilo is one of the 21st century’s most often performed living choral composers.
Linden Singers is conducted by Music Director, Brian Wismath, and accompanied by pianist, Aya Robertson.
