Les Amusements de la Chambre presents Music for Lady Melbourne, a concert of new and historical repertoire for harpsichord and violin.
This is the first concert of Les Amusements’ 2015/16 Season in Victoria, and will take place at the Church of Truth (111 Superior Street, Victoria) on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 8:00 pm.
The program features four sonatas from Johann Christian Bach’s Opus 10 Sonatas for Harpsichord and Violin, which were published in London in 1773 and dedicated to the popular Lady Melbourne. Complimenting and contrasting these charming works of Bach are two Canadian pieces, both commissioned by Les Amusements through the support of the Canada Council for the Arts: Rose with Thorns (2012) by Toronto-based composer Linda Catlin Smith, and the world premiere of a new work by BC composer Scott Godin, entitled evelyn. Godin’s beautiful new piece was inspired by the life and death of Evelyn McHale, and the famously striking photograph “The Most Beautiful Suicide,” which depicts the body of the 23 year old Evelyn McHale atop a crumpled limousine mere moments after her fatal jump from the Empire State Building in 1947.
Tickets: $20 general, $15 seniors, $10 students. Tickets available at the door, or in advance at Ivy’s Bookshop (2188 Oak Bay Avenue), and online at www.amusementsdelachambre.com.

Les Amusements de la Chambre is a unique Canadian chamber ensemble that specializes in the performance of music for early keyboard and strings. Founded by harpsichordist Katelyn Clark and violinist Emily Redhead during an artist residency at The Banff Centre in 2010, the ensemble explores repertoire from the seventeenth century to contemporary works of today. Based out of Victoria BC and Montréal QC, the ensemble collaborates with a variable pool of musicians in concert and frequently performs and commissions works by Canadian composers.
Most notably, Les Amusements has distinguished itself through creative presentations of the eighteenth-century concert experience in alternative and intimate venues. The ensemble has been presented by the Toronto Music Garden and Montreal’s Innovations en concert, and has received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.
Les Amusements is presenting its fourth season of chamber concerts in Victoria during the 2015/16 season.
