Please join us for our International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) celebrations! The event will begin at 1:30 pm with the presentation of the Valued Elder Recognition Award (VERA). This award is given to elders who have given exemplary service to helping others in the Capital Regional District. This will be followed by a tea and then a lecture by Dr. Laura Funk.
Lecture description:
Family plays a central role in our identities, experiences and well-being. Through this presentation we will examine the ways that families of older persons are changing in Canada, including the emergence of non-traditional families and new forms of interdependence between kin. Older persons are trailblazers in this regard. We will review existing research on phenomena such as stepfamilies, grandparents raising grandchildren, multigenerational living, and non-cohabiting relationships in late life. We will address the broader features of Canadian society and culture that contribute to these changes. Lastly, we will discuss questions such as the following: what are the implications for intergenerational relationships in families; how are responsibilities interpreted within families; and what are the implications for exchanges of support between older persons and their family members?
This event is free to attend. To help us ensure adequate catering, please register by September 24 by contacting the UVic Centre on Aging at 250-721-6369 or [email protected]. Please see our website for more information.
