The Department of Greek and Roman Studies welcomes Dr. Penelope Allison (Professor of Archaeology, University of Leicester) who will present a lecture entitled:
“Roman Military Bases as Complex Gendered Spaces”
The widely-held perspective is that Roman military bases, housed essentially segregated communities of male soldiers and their officers. This lecture discusses new analytical and theoretical approaches to the use of space within the 1st and 2nd centuries CE military sites.
Dr. Allison is an expert on Roman household archaeology, material-culture consumption, space and gender in domestic and frontier spaces, and digital archaeology.
