The Department of Greek and Roman Studies welcomes this year’s Lansdowne Lecturer:

Dr. Naoise Mac Sweeney, Professor of Classical Archaeology, Institute of Classical Archaeology, University of Vienna

Dr. Mac Sweeney will present a lecture entitled: The Trojan War: Ancient and Modern Ideas about the ‘Clash of Civilizations’

Dr. Mac Sweeney’s research focuses on the construction of identity and cultural interaction, especially the social formation of communities through cultural practice, and their conceptual formation through the construction of identity in the Iron Age to Classical periods in the ancient Greek world and Anatolia. She has published Community Identity and Archaeology: Dynamic Communities at Aphrodisias and Beycesultan; Foundation Myths and Politics in Ancient Ionia; and Troy: Myth, City, Icon in addition to numerous articles and chapters on regional identities in Asia Minor, connectivity, and racial and ethnicity in the ancient Greek world.
