Kids in the Spotlight is a program in which a group of multi-age children come together to explore their creativity and social development through the creation of a musical production.

The program caters to a multi-age group of children and teens so that participants learn about themselves in ways that peer-oriented activities do not provide. The age differences among the participants offers glimpses into the spectrum of development for all. Older children learn about how far they have come and younger children learn about what is in store.

Everyone learns about relating and boundaries. Participants make bonds with each other as they exercise (1) their imaginations through designing props and posters, (2) their bodies through playing games and choreographing dances, and (3) their minds through learning about others and their self.

Children Learn:

-How to support others
-How to contribute to the success of the group

Parents / Caregivers Learn:
-Child development (their own and their children's)
-The developmental aspects of the program

Format: The program combines a variety of group exercises, activities and discussions where children explore moral lessons, their own behaviours, and the behaviours of others in a non-judgmental setting. Use is made of theatre, music, dance, drama, and stage creation to facilitate group cooperation and learning.

Children choose to participate in any and all aspects of the project – writing, singing, playing musical instruments, choreographing, directing, prop-making, performing, etc. There are no auditions. Casting is a guided group process, aimed at placing children in parts where they can gain the most benefit. Older children support younger children in dances, songs and dramatic scenes. Youth Interns assist with the program and act as role models for younger participants.

Children stay at The Haven with a parent or guardian.
