Saturday, July 26th, 2014
2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Join Karla Robison, the District of Ucluelet Environmental and Emergency Services Manager, for a lecture of how Vancouver Island is dealing with the lingering effects of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake of March 2011 in the form of tsunami driftage.

This lecture is in support of the Maritimes newest exhibit the Field Trip Project, a unique Canada-Japan cultural art exchange that examines the Japanese tsunami of 2011.

There still remains a level of uncertainty on the quantity and movement of the Japanese tsunami debris following the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. Monitoring the approximately 1.5 million tons of floating material in the Pacific isnt an easy task, as wind effects and ocean currents greatly disperse materials leaving satellite tracking ineffective. Based on forecasts, the bulk of the debris is anticipated to arrive in waters off Alaska to California in 2013, and expected to trickle in for several years.
