7:30 PM to 9:30 PM

The Kaimerata Music Festival, under the directorship of Canadian violinist Kai Gleusteen, will present a five-day (August 19-23) five-concert journey through the music of Felix Mendelssohn. Kai Gleusteen and wife, French pianist Catherine Ordronneau, have brought this festival to Denman Island for several years, where Gleusteen's parents now reside.

Each year, they have featured a different composer. The couple, now based in Barcelona, travel throughout Europe to great acclaim. They have also just come off a successful seventeen city tour of China. This year the Kaimerata Festival will be hosted in Courtenay, Denman and Hornby Islands. Joining Kai and Catherine will be Ariel Barnes on cello, Hiroko Kagawa on violin and David Visentin on viola. Added to this list, of seasoned professionals, will be a quartet of talented student musicians. They will be gaining valuable experience and augmenting the chamber orchestra so that larger works can be programmed. The 2015 Mendelssohn Festival launches with a concert at Courtney's Stan Hagen Theatre on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:30 pm. In an innovative approach to programming, Gleusteen will introduce the audience to single movements of five of Mendelssohn's larger masterworks that will later be presented in their entirely on Denman Island. The schedule for the other concerts is as follows: Thursday, August 20 Denman Island Hall 7:30 pm "Mendelssohn As a Child Prodigy" Friday, August 21 Hornby Island Hall 7:30 pm "Mendelssohn's Masterpieces" Saturday, August 22 Denman Island Hall 4:00 pm "Incredible Quartets" Sunday, August 23 Denman Island Hall 4:00 pm "Mendelssohn and His Master" Gleusteen has a gift for communicating his knowledge and passion of the music to his audiences.

You will come away, not only excited by the performances, but also with a deeper understanding of the music. Tickets are $25 for individual concerts or $65 for the entire series (student prices are $12 and $33).

Tickets are available at Comox's Blue Heron Books, Courtenay's Laughing Oyster Books, or Denman Islands's General Store. For on-line tickets and more information see www.kaimerata.com
