For many British Columbians, the name Jon Day has a strangely familiar ring to it, perhaps thanks to his release concert being broadcast on CBC across Canada Live. Jon and his live YouTube video of Pity was recently featured on Sirius Backstage Series in February/March 2011, shown over 100,000 times at all Cineplex /Odeon theatres across Canada on the big screen before the feature presentations.
As a multi talented artist he grabbed the attention of Frances iconic electronic-artist and singer, Emilie Simon, who along with late producer Francois Chevallier (Arcade Fire, Coldplay), hired Jon to play organ on her latest album The Big Machine. He was commissioned arranger for Joni Mitchells honourary doctorate concert at McGill University and keyboardist and arranger for Quebec-star Ian Kelly.
Jon Day's sound is so unique that fans and industry-types are often hard-pressed to find traditional comparisons in style. When asked directly, Jon explains, It's no secret, my influences are super broad. The inspiration for my songs is deeply rooted in emotion. For the same reasons, I love listening to gospel music - but I also love surprise, improvisation, melodies and a general sense of adventure. As for Exhibit B, people often revert to calling it an art-pop album, for lack of better words.
As a vocalist, Jon's sound clearly distinguishes him from the pack, while his falsetto may be reminiscent of Peter Gabriel, his rhythmic sense as a singer is a hats-off to Michael Jackson. Add a whole whack of musicianship, toss in some exceptional lyric-writing, shake it all up, and youve got yourself a Jon Day.
