Jon and Roy
Jon and Roy went searching for something intangible on their fourth recording, Let it Go. Suffice it to say, they found it. Freedom — from artistic constraints, from audience expectations — became a recurring theme for the duo during the creation of Let it Go. If there was one rule for longtime friends and collaborators Jon Middleton (guitar/vocals) and Roy Vizer (drums/percussion), it was to have no rules at all. Some artists wouldn’t dare touch a winning streak that resulted in gigs with Finley Quaye, Mother Mother, among others. Fewer still would risk a reputation that has warranted appearances at some of the most established and popular folk festivals in Canada. Jon and Roy are unique in that regard. Despite their considerable success as an independent act the music-making process - above all else - is what continues to drive them. For any band, big or small, the simplest of intentions — playing music for enjoyment’s sake, if not the pure joy of collaboration — are often the first things to get lost along the way. Jon and Roy rediscovered that feeling on Let it Go. They found what they were looking for.
Vince Vaccaro
Montreal born Vince Vaccaro has been calling the Canadian West Coast home for more than half his life. His music reflects a deep connection with the coast and surrounding environment, amidst time inspired stories and songs. Wether backed by his band of roots rockers, or performing solo acoustic, Vince Vaccaro’s songs are honest and true.
“The songs are about life, they’re about all the colours that exist out there. I’m experiencing the world around me and writing about it. My loves and passions are for the ocean, for the beauty of this place we live in, for so many things…its hard to sum it up.”
Vince Vaccaro has shared stages with many great Canadian and International artists including Mumford & Sons, Temper Trap, Matt Mays, Weezer, Sam Roberts, City & Colour, The Sheepdogs, Bedouin Soundclash, Matthew Good, Jets Overhead, 5440, Kim Churchill, Jon & Roy, Current Swell, and many others. A recent stint in Australia with a real grass roots approach found Vaccaro performing in small venues and even on the streets. It all starts somewhere, as they say.A true Canadian songwriter, roots rocker, surfer, traveller – Vince Vaccaro has always followed his heart in his music; expect just that every time he gets up on a stage.
Carmanah
The musicians of Carmanah named the band in honour of the people who fought to keep the old growth trees in the Carmanah Valley of Vancouver Island safe from logging companies in 1988. Through protest, civil disobedience, and chaining themselves to the biggest Sitka Spruces in the world, the Canada Wilderness Committee, First Nations Peoples and other passionate British Columbians were awarded with the creation of Carmanah Pacific Provincial Park in 1990.
The band, Carmanah, is proud to embrace the energy of the beautiful west-coast of Canada. They have captivated audiences of all ages and musical preferences with a sound that incorporates folk, funk, rock, roots and reggae. Abounding with musical energy, original writing and dedication, Carmanah is excited to be growing into the Canadian music scene.
Carmanah opened for Ziggy Marley in 2013, and has played at a variety of music festivals including Rifflandia Music Festival in Victoria, BC, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, ON. They have shared the stage with bands including Current Swell, Said the Whale, Wake Owl, Jon & Roy and the Boom Booms.
In the Spring of 2014 the band completed their first Western Canadian tour, playing at venues across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In Lloydminster, SK, they spontaneous met and befriended Canadian Olympian and icon, Clara Hughes. Following this, they were invited to perform in Ottawa on July 1st to celebrate the completion of “Clara’s Big Ride.”
Carmanah is proud to be a member of The Jellyfish Project, an environmental initiative that brings musicians and bands into schools across Canada. Through the power of music and live performance, students are engaged into the environmental conversation and are given ways on how to become active participants in the sustainability movement.
We see the challenges that our world faces today and believe that, for us, music is the best way to speak our minds. We look forward to meeting you one day and to hearing what you have to say.
