Colwood's Church of the Advent is proud to showcase the brilliant new album by Victoria's "poet of the piano", Brent Jarvis in its October instalment of its perennially popular Jazz Vespers Series. This all-star trio will consist of Brent Jarvis on piano and local jazz greats Miguelito Valdes on trumpet and congas and Steve MacDonald on bass.
The fifth of Brent's original and award winning albums, The Medium is made up of equal parts be-bop, European classical music, and Cuban rhythm. Drawing on the standard jazz repertoire and new compositions The Medium features the trumpet and conga playing of Latin Grammy award winning Miguelito Valdes , the bass playing of Steve MacDonald, and the Timbale and Cajon playing of Jose Sanchez. Loosely based on the Marshall McLuhan book "The Medium is The Message" this latest album more thoroughly explores the recorded medium.
Active as a teacher, producer and recording engineer, Brent has taught piano, musicianship, ensemble, as well as conducted master classes at The Victoria Conservatory of Music, Vancouver Island University, and at his private teaching studio in Victoria. Brent's credits as an engineer and producer include some of Canada's premier jazz musicians.
The combination of Brent's creative and poetic piano playing, Miguelito's joyful trumpet and Cuban-bred conga playing, and Steve's impressive virtuosity on the bass, promise to make for another brilliant evening of Jazz Vespers.
