Colwood’s Church of the Advent continues its ever popular Jazz Vespers Series on Sunday, November 15th with a wonderful duo: singer/songwriter, Anne Schaefer and bassist, Sean Drabbitt.
One of the most gifted singer-songwriters in the country, Victoria’s award-winning Anne Schaefer combines intelligent lyrics with a genre-blurring musicality that combines elements of classical, jazz, folk, and world music. Born into a family of musicians in small town Saskatchewan, her musical lineage was sown in classical study and performance and has grown and blossomed into virtually every genre as her passion and curiosity continues to expand. Her love of music could not be contained to studying, writing and performing, and she has garnered an impeccable 30 tear legacy of music instruction and facilitation in order to inspire and share what she believes to be the birthright of every human.
Schaefer has taken her musical perspective touring through three continents and a myriad of contexts from performance in cafes, concert halls, and everything in between, to private instruction, chord ensembles, and workshops of every musical creative expression imaginable. Joining Anne will be local bass virtuoso, Sean Drabbitt. Originally from Victoria, Drabbitt left 24 years ago to study Jazz bass in Los Angeles with mentor John Clayton.
The next decade he spent first in New Orleans, where he worked with all members of the Marsalis family, then in New York, working with the best young players on the modern jazz scene. Specializing in a hard driving hard bop informed style of bass playing he returned to Victoria close to 15 years ago. Today he divides his time between various projects on both electric and acoustic bass.
More recent career highlights have included a western Canadian tour with Terrell Stafford’s quintet in and a number of gigs with pianist George Colligan.
