At our first fall meeting we will be exploring the history of Japanese settlement and industry in Nanaimo, with guest speaker Tami Hirasawa from the Nanaimo Japanese Canadian Cultural Society (the 7 Potatoes, which is what the word Nanaimo sounds like in Japanese).
Tami is Nikkei Sansei (3rd Generation Japanese Canadian). She is pleased to be the President of the 7 Potatoes which she was appointed in May 2021. Originally from Hamilton Ontario, she currently studies Classical Japanese Dance (Nihon Buyo) with her teacher, Mari Kaneta of Suzuyuki-Kai in Arizona. Tami and her husband Dave practice the art of Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) with Todo-kai in Nanaimo.
Join us and learn more about this important part of Nanaimo’s history. Refreshments will follow the presentation. All are welcome.
