It's Show Time!

The ladies of Encore! Women's Choir are still buzzing with New York excitement as they prepare for their upcoming concert "It's Show Time!" being presented on Saturday, May 24, 2014, 7:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed church, 930 Trunk Road, Duncan. The choir is excited to share their experiences from their International Women's Day concert at the Lincoln Centre in New York which forged connections between women's choirs from around the world.

Conductor Christine Dandy described the trip as being a "very well-timed milestone in the development of Encore! Women's Choir and allowed the group to advance in terms of musical difficulty while at the same time, experiencing the wonders of singing with well-prepared, highly educated musicians in a world-class auditorium". She went on to say: "Everything about our Lincoln Centre performance was excellent - from the detailed organization by Distinguished Concerts International New York ("DCINY") to the wonderful musical direction of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, whose professionalism, knowledge and experience was an inspiration to all of us".

Dandy acknowledged that the generosity of local businesses, professionals, and individuals played a large part in helping the choir achieve its New York milestone. "Encore! is now considered alumni of DCINY", she explained "and we've been cordially invited back. We look forward to our next New York adventure".

The first half of the May 24th concert will feature six of the nine pieces prepared for New York. The selections will be presented under the headings "We Salute Women in Moments of Reflextion", We Salute Women in Celebration" and We Honour Women in Observations of the World" as they were at the Lincoln Centre. Cellist, Trisha Daniell, violinist, Garth Williams and percussionist, Mark Ridewood will join Encore!'s accompanist Rykie Avenant during the presentation of these selections.

The concert will open with the bright and lilting "Flocks are Sporting" by Henry Carey (arr. by Brian Trant) extolling the virtues of spring followed by a presentation of the duet "O Lovely Peace" by choir members, Sue Ryan and Ann Yelland, from Handel's "Judas Maccabeus", also evocative of spring.

The second part of the program will include favourite tunes from the following shows: "Stop the World I want to Get off", Carousel" , "Camelot", and "The Witches' Chorus" from Verdi's opera "Macbeth". Canadian folk songs will be featured as will a special arrangement of "Danny Boy" by Canadian composer Allan Bevan. As always, there will be a few music surprises showing off the choir's light and breezy approach!
