Spring has sprung and Nanaimo Community Gardens Society wants to get people growing. With more and more people interested in growing their own food, new community gardens are being started in all parts of the city.

The Young Professionals of Nanaimo established one such community garden, on the corner of Irwin and Needham Street, in Nanaimo�s south end. This garden has already produced lots of food for Loaves and Fishes Food bank with raised garden beds, an irrigation system and enthusiastic community volunteers. Nanaimo Community Gardens Society will be taking over the Irwin Street Garden and focusing on operating educational programming on the site. There will be opportunities for hands-on volunteering by individuals, participation by community groups, tours and field trips and workshops in the coming season.

To mark the handover of the Irwin Street Garden from the Young Professionals of Nanaimo to Nanaimo Community Gardens Society both groups will be participating in an event at the garden on May 17th, 2014. This event will run from 11am to 3pm with the official handover ceremony at 12:30pm. Facilitators will be on site to answer gardening questions and demonstrate transplanting techniques with vegetable seedlings. There will be free refreshments and organically raised seedlings for sale at the event. The public is welcome to tour the garden and help plant seeds that will nourish south end residents.

Work parties will be held at the Irwin Street Garden starting May 13th on Tuesdays from 5:30-8:30pm and Sundays from 11am to 2pm. Bring gloves and hand tools if you have them.
